
J. Michael Dunn, PhD, President
J. Michael Dunn is recently retired from Indiana University, and was the founding dean IU’s School of Informatics, as well as Professor of Informatics and Computer Science, and Oscar Ewing Professor of Philosophy. Dunn’s other administrative experience includes two terms as a department chair and a term as executive associate dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. He chaired the University Information Technology Committee, and in this role oversaw the creation of a five year plan for information technology at IU.
Dunn has an A.B. in Philosophy from Oberlin Colleg and a Ph.D. in Philosophy (Logic) from the University of Pittsburgh.. Dunn’s primary research interest is the logic of relevance, as well as other information-based logics. He is the author of five books and over 80 articles. His research has been recognized by awards from Fulbright, NEH, ACLS, and NSF. He has been an editor of The Journal of Symbolic Logic and of The Journal of Philosophical Logic. He is listed in Who’s Who in America and Who’s Who in the World. In 2007 he was made a Sagamore of the Wabash by Governor Mitch Daniels, and was also awarded the Indiana University Bloomington Provost’s Medal.
Dunn has been president and vice president of the Old Northeast Downtown Neighborhood Association, served on the Board of Bloomington Restorations, and was chair of the City of Bloomington’s Council on Neighborhood Improvements. He has also served on the Indiana Chamber of Commerce’s Technology and Advanced Manufacturing Task Force, and currently serves on advisory boards at two universities.
Dunn lives in a historic house near campus with his wife Sally. Their hobbies include historic restoration and gardening. They have two grown married children.
Samual Kelley, PhD, Past President
Dr. Samuel Kelley began his involvement with health information technology in the mid 1980s when he developed a custom program marketing retail pharmacies to patients using information obtained from pharmacy health screenings. Later in the 1980s Sam moved to Auburn University and participated in the development of an award winning patient counseling “robot” funded by the United States Pharmacopeial Convention under the direction of Bill Felkey. During the 1990’s Sam acquired a PhD in Management from the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University and taught business strategy, marketing strategy, and international marketing at Indiana University Southeast, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, the Helsinki School of Economics and International Business, and the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University Bloomington. Sam’s research and writing focused on innovation management in multinational corporations. He frequently used computerized business simulations to provide students with a “hands on” approach to management. In 2003, Sam returned to the healthcare arena and has sold his services to CVS, Target, Wal-Mart, and Bloomington Hospital (Bloomington, IN). Sam has developed expertise in indigent care programs, telepharmacy, medication safety, and issues in rural healthcare. He served as President of the Board of Directors at Healthlinc 2009-2010.
Dave Burnworth, Vice President
Dave Burnworth is presently employed by Internal Medicine Associates, A Division of Premier Healthcare, in Bloomington, IN as Practice Administrator. He has been with IMA for 8 years. Prior to that he worked in the home medical equipment industry for 8 years and prior to that he worked at Bloomington Hospital for 17 years in a variety of roles including Assistant Director of Allied Health and Director of the Vascular Lab. He started his healthcare career in 1973 at Good Samaritan Hospital in Vincennes, IN as a Respiratory Therapist and became the Assistant Chief Respiratory Therapist. He then moved to Connersville, IN where he assumed the role of Director of Cardiopulmonary Services at Fayette Memorial Hospital. He is a Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) and Registered Vascular Technologist (RVT). He has served on the Board of the Indiana Society for Respiratory Care in various positions including President, Treasurer, Chapter Director and Delegate to the House of Delegates of the American Association for Respiratory Care. He attended Vincennes University where he obtained his A.S. and has attended Ottawa University in Kansas and Indiana University.
He currently serves on the Greater Bloomington Chamber of Commerce Health Care Team which he chaired for 3 years. He was appointed by Governor Mitch Daniels to the Indiana Home Health Services and Hospice Services Councils at the Indiana State Department of Health in 2007. He was also appointed in February, 2011 by Governor Daniels to serve on the Respiratory Care Committee at the Indiana Health Professions Bureau which administers the licensing of Respiratory Care Practitioners in the State of Indiana.
Dave and his wife Ann have three sons and three grandchildren.
Mark McMath, Secretary
Mark McMath joined Indiana University Health Bloomington as Vice President and Chief Information Officer (CIO) in 2003. He is responsible for information technology, telecommunications, pharmacy, support and project management services. He began his career with IBM in Illinois and returned to the Midwest from Connecticut where he served as Vice President and Chief Information Officer for Clinical Laboratory Partners, a provider of diagnostic testing and information and laboratory management services. He also served as Chief Information Officer for Hamilton Health Care System in Georgia.
Under his leadership, IU Health Bloomington completed and is currently implementing an enterprise wide strategic information technology plan. This plan is centered around further improving the quality, safety, coordination and efficiency of the care the health system provides to the communities it serves in the 10 county South Central Indiana region.
Mark holds a Bachelors of Science degree in management from Purdue University and is a member of the College of Healthcare Information Management Executives, the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society, and the American College of Healthcare Executives. Active in the local community, Mark serves as secretary on the HealthLINC information exchange and treasurer on Martha’s House (an emergency shelter for adults) board of directors. He also serves on the City of Bloomington’s Digital Underground Advisory Committee.
Mark and his wife Julie have two daughters. Alyssa is a graduate of Indiana University and is working for a local law firm. Ashley graduated from Kennesaw State University and is a 4th grade teacher in Georgia.
James Howard Buher, Treasurer
Mr. Buher recently retired from Indiana University after 43 years of service. Most of his time was spent working directly in academic schools where he was responsible for their budgeting, financial management, facilities, staffing, and infrastructure. In 2005, he was asked by the President of Indiana University to assume the position of President and Chief Executive Officer for the Midwest Proton Radiotherapy Institute (MPRI). At the time, MPRI was one of only three proton therapy treatment centers in the US. In this capacity he was responsible for overseeing the completion of the proton therapy treatment rooms and hiring appropriate staff for the new facility – including radiation oncology physicians, therapists, dosemetrists, physicists and all related personnel. After the treatment rooms were completed, the appropriate staffing level was reached and the center was financially sound, Mr. Buher returned to IU in 2008.
From 2008 until his retirement in 2010, Mr. Buher was a special consultant to the IU VP/Finance and CFO. His primary task during this time was to work with IU’s Northwest Campus in Gary, IN. He was a consultant to the campus chancellor, leading the campus in establishing new budget processes, constructing the campus budget and assisting them in becoming financially successful.
In his earlier years at IU, Mr. Buher was instrumental in the establishment and development of two new schools at Indiana University—the School of Public and Environmental Affairs and the School of Informatics. His role in both schools was to establish the support infrastructure, to establish and manage the budgeting and financial systems and to assist the dean in school operation.
He is a life-long resident of Indiana and an IU graduate. He enjoys traveling, golf and his “side job” as scoreboard operator for both Indiana University Football and Men’s Basketball. He lives on a farm south of Bloomington with his wife Becky. They have two grown children.
Paul Johnson, MD
Dr. Paul E Johnson is a practicing Otolaryngologist with ENT Associates of Southern Indiana, P.C. He joined ENT Associates in July of 2003. Dr. Johnson earned his BA from Hanover College in 1994 graduating cum laude with a major in Business Administration and a minor in chemistry. He graduated with Honors from the Indiana University School of Medicine in 1998. While at Indiana he was elected to the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. After Medical School, Dr. Johnson completed his Otolaryngology training at the Wake Forest University/Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, NC. Dr. Johnson served as a Chief Resident in Otolaryngology from 2002-2003.
In addition to a busy clinical practice, Dr. Johnson has become very involved in administrative activities in the Bloomington medical community. He served as Chief of Surgery at Bloomington Hospital for 2008 and 2009. In 2010 he will become Chief of Staff-Elect moving into this role as chief of staff in 2012. He is also the current managing partner of ENT Associates, as well as a member of the board of the directors and medical staff president of the Southern Indiana Surgery Center.
Dr. Johnson is a fellow of the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, The American College of Surgeons, and is a member of the Indiana State Medical Association and Monroe/Owen County Medical Society.
In his spare time Dr. Johnson enjoys golf, running, rooting for the Hoosiers, Colts and Cubs. He also enjoys time with his wonderful wife Heather and sons Reid and Rhett.
Robert Wrenn, MD
Robert Wrenn is a 1967 graduate of Indiana University, with an AB in Zoology. He attended the Indiana University School of Medicine, which is where he received his Medical Degree. His internship and Residency both took place at Methodist Hospital of Indianapolis. In 1975 he joined with his father-in-law’s practice, which subsequently formed the group that became part of Aegis Women’s Healthcare. He sees patients at the McIntire Drive office as well as the Bedford location. He is certified with the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology and is a Fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. He belongs to the American Medical Association, the Indiana State Medical Association, and the American Fertility Society. He is a Clinical Assistant of OB/GYN at Indiana University School of Medicine. He is the former president of the Monroe- Owen County Medical Society, and has been section chief of Obstetrics and Gynecologists at Bloomington Hospital. He is a Certified Clinical Densitometrist. Dr. Wrenn is the middle of three children, born in Momence, Illinois. He is the father of three children: David, a realtor; Jennifer, an OB-GYN Physician in Columbus Ohio; and Jeremy, a musician and IT Administrator. His wife, Ann, is an active volunteer and support person for her family and medical families. His hobbies include golf, photography, underwater photography, scuba, and woodworking.
Karen Shacklette
Kenneth E. Marshall, MD
Ken Marshall, M.D. was hired as Chief Medical Officer (CMO) for Indiana University Health Bloomington in March of 2010. As CMO, he oversees quality improvement and patient safety, medical staff services, risk management, and the IU Health Southern Indiana Physicians Group.
Dr. Marshall joined IU Health Bloomington from Mountain States Health Alliance, a 15-hospital health care system in northeast Tennessee where he served as Senior Vice President of Medical Affairs. He has extensive experience in leading quality improvement and patient safety initiatives, and working collaboratively with physicians, nurses, leadership and hospital staff.
Dr. Marshall is a board-certified family practice physician and earned a medical degree from the University of Kentucky College of Medicine. He also holds a Master of Business Administration from the University of Kentucky.
