Managing the Health Commons – Nobel Prize Winner Studies Health
The greatest challenge facing healthcare in America is how we use our limited resources to achieve better health and better care at a lower cost. Elinor Ostrom won the 2009 Nobel Prize in Economics for a theory that could help us reach this goal. That’s why the Fannie E. Rippel Foundation has initiated a new 18-month action-research project with the Nobel Laureate and her Workshop in Political Theory and Policy Analysis at Indiana University. They will focus on economic governance, especially the “commons.” The project will be led by Professor Ostrom, PhD, Research Advisor, and Michael McGinnis, PhD, Principal Investigator.

Indiana Ranked #9 in States With Highest Rates of E-Prescribing
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Sept. 21, 2010 – At an event on Capitol Hill today featuring elected officials and leaders from throughout the nation’s health care system, Surescripts announced that Massachusetts ranks first in the nation when it comes to use of electronic prescribing. The announcement took place at the annual Safe-Rx Awards, where Surescripts also announced that more than 200,000 office-based prescribers – one out of every three physicians, nurse practitioners and physician assistants in the United States – now use e-prescribing. By replacing a pen and paper prescription pad with a more accurate, reliable and secure electronic prescription and by allowing doctors to access critical information regarding their patients’ medications and health plan coverage, e-prescribing saves lives, time and money, and improves the quality of care.

New funds support rural hospitals’ switch to electronic health records
HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius today announced nearly $20 million in new technical support assistance to help critical access and rural hospital facilities convert from paper-based medical records to certified electronic health record (EHR) technology. Some 1,655 critical access and rural hospitals in 41 states and the nationwide Indian Country, headquartered in the District of Columbia, stand to benefit from this assistance, which can help each of them qualify for substantial EHR incentive payments from Medicare and Medicaid.
