New Funds Will Create and Evaluate Prevention Programs and Services for Adolescents at Risk for Substance Abuse and HIV/AIDS
Bloomington, Ind. and Nashville, Tenn.—Centerstone Research Institute (CRI), a company of Centerstone, the nation’s largest provider of community-based behavioral healthcare, today announced that it has secured a $1.7 million grant from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s (SAMHSA) Center for Substance Abuse Prevention (CSAP). The five-year grant will be used to create and evaluate comprehensive, culturally sensitive, evidence-based services designed to prevent or reduce the onset of substance abuse and transmission of HIV/AIDS among adolescents, particularly within the African-American and Latino communities, in 13 counties in Middle Tennessee.
“Adolescents with substance abuse disorders are more likely to be sexually active, have greater numbers of partners, and initiate sexual activity at younger ages. Risky behaviors such as these contribute enormously to the spread of HIV/AIDS,” said Dennis Morrison, Ph.D., CEO of CRI. “The rate of HIV/AIDS infection among Tennessee’s young people is already very concerning. We hope that, by offering culturally accessible resources to help adolescents prevent and combat substance abuse, we can ultimately assist in reducing the transmission of HIV/AIDS throughout Middle Tennessee.”
